The Key Biscayne Citizen Scientist Project has requested the development of an mobile application for iOS and Android to be able to expand their audience and further fulfill their mission of having citizen and professional scientists monitor, protect and share information on the most critical natural resources of Key Biscayne. The application aims to feature the information provided on the Key Science website as well as integrating offline viewing, an easier to use mobile user interfaces, user profiles and the Geo Hunt educational game. The Citizen Scientist Project iOS Application 2.0 is the second release of the application and aims to extend the functionality of the previous Version 1.0 to provide a much more user friendly experience. Our team has also be started the development process of an Android Application that will mimic the iOS application.

Project Description

This is a software engineering project, lead by Mark Finlayson. Based off research showing that a lack of role models contributes to decreased participation from underrepresented groups, an NSF-funded series of workshops will be held at Title 1 Miami Dade public schools that will expose students to stories of minorities and women role models in computer science. A web application is being requested to assist with conducting the activities of the workshop and collecting anonymized usage date to advance improvement to the workshops and research into the issue.

FIU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science is working with the Pinecrest Police Department (PPD) to create a web application that replaces the current process to manually fill and distribute Be On the Look Out (BOLO) reports. The BOLO web application is currently on a new development process that replaces the old version with new software requirements. This new system is contained within a clean 3 Tier RESTful architecture using Springboot and MySql Database for the backend. Angular6 and Angular Material are the technologies used for the front end. This technology requirements were set by product owners.

Learning with Augmented and Virtual Reality 6.0 is a learning system that focuses on providing an interactive environment for students majoring in architecture, where they can view animations, diagrams, and lesson plans as they navigate through a model environment. The Village of Pinecrest Police Department has worked to develop the Virtual Roll Call Briefing application, used to replace an in-person roll call meeting occurring at the beginning of each shift at the police station. The application aids in convenience and efficiency for supervisors to be able to relay information and most importantly keeps officers up-to-date, informed, and safe while out on patrol.

Project Description

Currently, many departments at Miami-Dade County don’t have a system in place to manage and track the modification of agenda items (matters or items) before they get sent to the agenda coordinator’s office. This causes many accountability issues when trying to track down who edited a matter last, or who has the most up to date copy. Agenda matters are transferred between peers either through email, word documents with comment annotations, fax, and even hard copies. Our software aims to help facilitate this process by providing a portal where a user within a department can submit, edit, view, and route matters to other users of the application so that a specific matter can have a history of who modified it and when. The software would be a one-stop shop that streamlines the process of agenda management through the help of user accounts, dynamic PDF creation, audit trails, and more.

Learning Management System 1.0. Online courses are being integrated into Universities to provide an opportunity for students who live too far from school and/or work schedule gives little to no space for an on-campus scheduled course. This is the 9th iteration of the Vertically Integrated Projects website. It is a tool used by Senior Project students, VIP students, and Faculty to browse projects, apply to projects, and submit project proposals. Faculty can also review student applications and assign them to teams. Along with the administrative tasks, it is also used with Mobile Judge for the end-of-semester showcase.

One of the major challenges that English Language learners (ELL) as well as mainstream students face is the lack of a reliable source to improve their academic words. There is no easy way to validate the easiness of text, which allows professors to select the appropriate materials for class. A challenging text is a wonderful way to propel students forward, yet something too hard to read can cause the opposite effect. Vocabulary in Reading Study(VIRS) is the solution to all these problems.

Project Description

Multi-Vehicle Patrolling is a Python-based project to create patrol routes for autonomous vehicles in hopes of reducing the manpower needed to monitor an area for potential disruptions or security issues. The patrol route algorithm accounts for a number of different factors including vehicle type (air, ground or sea), vehicle energy budget, critical infrastructure areas, total area coverage, and route randomization to guarantee effective monitoring of the target area. The current system is made specifically for the cargo shipment area of Port Everglades, FL.

Project Description

Web Page Archiving and Content Analysis 2.0. Before this, no solution existed to batch download large sets of web pages into a format that allows easy programmatic access to pages’ component parts. Now, one can use the tool built during this project to download, from a provided set of URLs, a faithful snapshot of news articles or blog posts, with all multimedia in original formats and with original file names, encapsulate this snapshot in a single file from which images, videos, or other multimedia can be easily extracted, enable the archive to be easily opened in a browser for viewing and browsing, with links to external sites preserved, but with links to local multimedia resources pointing to in the in-archive artifacts, identify the main textual content of the article, translate the web page, and extract that into a separate file with appropriate encodings, identify the posting, publishing, and/or correction date of the article.

Project Description

Snackability is a collaboration between the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition and the Senior Project course at FIU. This app was born after a study conducted by Dr. Cristina Palacios and her team that showed alarming results regarding the diet of adolescent and college students and the growing amount of unhealthy snacks popularized among them. Currently, there is a guideline for healthy snacking published by the USDA; however, these are often lost in translation when youth are faced with the decision to choose a snack. Snackabilty provides a simple guide informing how healthy the snack is by assigning a score based on how compliant it is to the USDA guideline for healthy snacks. The app is being piloted by FIU students for further research.

Project Description

The purpose of this project is to provide a platform for users to connect to their unconscious. We implemented an Android application based on version 1.0 which implemented Mark Mohr’s algorithm in Java, that decodes words and phrases to a 3 digit code to test for compatibility. In addition to the algorithm we created and implemented a UI design for the application and added sounds to engage the user.
